Résumé : | This essay analyses digital labour markets where labour - intensive services are traded by matching requesters (employers and/or consumers) and providers (workers). It defines and conceptualises these markets, describes their functioning , the socio - demographic profiles of the participants, and review s their economic and social effects. This contribution is one of a kind because it gathers extensive primary and secondary evidence (a total of about 370 unique sources) and it takes an inter - disciplinary approach in which economics, sociology, anthropology, legal studies, and rhetorical analysis converge . It alternates the discussion of ‘hard’ findings from experimental and quasi - experimental studies with analysis of ‘softer’ issue s such as rhetorical discourses and media ‘hyped’ accounts. This approach is inspired by, and a tribute to, the enduring legacy of the work of Albert O. Hirschman (1970, 1977, and 1991) and his view that ideas and rhetoric can become endogenous engines of social change, reforms, and policies. (source : review) |
