Résumé : | Job segression by sex is examined during the transition to capitalism and the establishment of the wage labor market in England and the United States. It is argued that male workers, through their unions, played a crucial role in limiting women's participation in wage labor. They thus succeeded in maintaining their patriarchal power in new capitalist settings. Patriarchy benefits capitalists, as well, to teh extend that sexual inequality allows capitalists to keep the working class divided. Job segregation by sex in the labor market perpetuates women's economic dependence on men, maintaining the sexual division of labor within the family as well. Women must struggle against both patriarchy and capital in order to end their subordination. |
