Résumé : | The main purpose of this paper is to analyse the role the French hotel employers play in the quality of working conditions especially for housekeepers, typically feminine and low-wage workers. Labour market segmentation and dual market theory are not new with, on one hand, a primary sector comprising qualified workers employed in attractive and stable positions and, on the other hand, a secondary sector with manpower in low-paid and insecure jobs, often in back-breaking working conditions. However, they have recently reappeared in the case of housekeepers in the French hotel industry, where there are very few career prospects. The hotel industry continues to be France's emblematic low-wage sector and could also set a standard in labour market segmentation. Nevertheless, the fast development of hotel chains leads to some changes in wage and labour organization, building a kind of high road practice. (résumé auteur) |
