Résumé : | In supermarkets as everywhere in the job market, women occupy the bottom of the job scale. This is obtained of course by excluding them of better-paid jobs ; but also by keeping them in specific, all-female jobs, for ex. that of cashier. Because this job does not require physical strength, the fact that it is an arduous task is ignored, and it is deemed more «feminine» than that of filling shelves for ex. ; the latter, while nervously less trying, is valued for men, and considered a punishment for women. These ideological mechanisms playing on the idea of a feminine «Nature» push women into «preferring» a job which is both exhausting and commands the minimum wage. |
