Résumé : | In this article, the evolution of returns to education is compared to the evolution of the returns to experience during the first five years of employment in France. Competencies are measured along a vertical dimension, describing the levels of general competencies that are transferable to the set of all jobs and along a horizontal dimension describing the domain of professional competencies that are transferable to a subset of jobs. Estimations of the returns functions are based on assignment models. The professional domain of education plays a role in ordering the access to the highest paying jobs but does not have its own return. Close proximity between the professional domain of education and the professional domain of the job leads to a large wage benefit in the first employment that strongly diminishes in succeeding posts. Returns to work experience then take over, in particular the length of that experience. |
