| Résumé : | Teacher shortages in vocational education and training (VET) have been growing across Europe, driven by an ageing workforce, low numbers of new entrants to the profession, and unattractiveness of the teaching career. Not only are these shortages quantitative, but also qualitative, as many teachers lack opportunities to keep their technical and pedagogical competences up to date. Countries are responding with reforms to initial teacher education, more flexible side entry pathways, expanded continuing professional development, and measures to improve retention and career attractiveness. Cedefop’s European Vocational Teacher Survey (EVTS) plays a key role in addressing persistent evidence gaps by providing harmonised data to support more coherent policy design. Examples from Germany and France illustrate di erent national approaches to tackling teacher shortages. Strengthening data systems, ensuring coherent career pathways, and aligning recruitment and retention strategies remain essential to sustaining the VET teaching workforce. |
