Résumé : |
This thought piece reflects on the importance of a sense of belonging for underrepresented student groups (e.g., students from low socioeconomic backgrounds) to succeed at university. In this paper, I refer to the connection between sense of belonging and social inequalities (particularly focusing on the students'socioeconomic status) and discuss the role that universities can play in fostering students' sense of belonging. In the field of higher education, sense of belonging is often refered to as student abilities to build social networks, which can facilitate transition to university (Brooman & Darwent, 2014). Strengthening a sense of belonging requires appropriate structures, because "if structural barriers are prohibitive, addressing any psychological factor should not help" (Murphy et al., 2020, p. 2).
In this thought piece, I start by discussing the importance of a sense of belonging and address how a sense of belonging interrelates with socioeconomic background of students. Then, I present articulations by students to illustrate the experiences and needs of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Finally, I propose that universities can engage better with diverse learners and I reflect on the responsibility of universities to foster a sense of belonging among students. |
